The Queensland Department of Environment, which is managing the renewed waste strategy, said it is not sure whether details of submissions to the strategy will be made publicly available, drawing the fire of
the waste industry. |

| Sunshine Coast Discussion Paper |
| The Sunshine Coast Regional Council (Council) has embarked on a journey to becoming Australia’s
most sustainable region and reducing our wastes to landfill to zero by 2020. Minimising our wastes
and maximising the re-use of embodied resources is a major part of becoming sustainable. This
Discussion Paper sets out the general direction we need to head for improved waste management
and has been informed by the suggestions of the WASTE TASKFORCE made up of community
members, waste managers and producers in the private sector, and the Council’s staff. After
feedback on this document, Council and the Taskforce will develop a draft Strategy for consideration
by Councillors in November. The Strategy aims to divert 70% of waste by 2014. |

| AustGovt Green Paper Strongly Affected Industries July08 |
| The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will increase the cost of
producing emissions-intensive goods and services. Where industries
cannot fully pass on increases in production costs to consumers, entities
in those industries may face a reduction in their profitability. While many
industries will face costs from the scheme, some industries may be
particularly strongly affected. The Government has committed to address
the impact of the scheme on these strongly affected industries. |
|
| AustGovt Green Paper Transport Fact Sheet July08 |
| Including transport in the scheme will reduce the cost of cutting Australia’s
greenhouse gas emissions. The more sectors excluded from the scheme, the higher
the cost faced by the included sectors and, ultimately, by consumers. Excluding petrol
would not lead to lower costs for households – to the contrary, any abatement that
would otherwise have come from the transport sector will have to occur elsewhere
and at higher cost. |

| AustGovt Green Paper Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme July08 |
| Carbon pollution is causing climate change, resulting in higher temperatures, more
droughts, rising sea levels and more extreme weather.
The 12 hottest years in history have all been in the last 13 years and IPCC scenarios
project temperature rises between 1 and 6.4 degrees over the next century relative to
1980–99.
Without action, scientists predict up to 20 per cent more drought months over most
of Australia by 2030, more intense and damaging cyclones and rising sea levels with
serious impacts on:
• coastal property in Australia
• low lying Asian mega cities
• the Pacific Islands. |
|
| AustGovt Green Paper Press Release July 2008 |
| The Rudd Government today released proposals for a new plan to tackle climate change by
reducing carbon pollution.
Releasing the Government’s Green Paper on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, Minister for
Climate Change and Water, Senator Penny Wong, said the time for action on climate change was
now. |
